Richard Attenborough
Actor, Director and Producer
Richard Attenborough's life in film needs no introduction; from his first stage and film appearances in 1942 his career as an actor, director and producer has spanned more than 55 years starring in numerous west end theatre productions and more than 60 films.
Best known for his award winning films Attenborough became an independent film producer in 1959 and made a triumphant directorial debut in the sixties with the satirical musical Oh! What A Lovely War which won 16 international awards including a Golden Globe and the BAFTA United Nations Award.
As a film maker, he is undoubtedly best known for Gandhi, 1982 winner of eight Academy Awards® and five BAFTA Awards, personally receiving the accolades for ‘Best Picture' and ‘Best Director' on both sides of the Atlantic as well as the Director's Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement. He has also directed Young Winston, which earned another Golden Globe, A Bridge Too Far, winner of the Evening News Best Drama Award, Magic, A Chorus Line and Cry Freedom, which was awarded the Berlinale Kamera and BFI Award for Technical Achievement.
The RAAM life time achievement Award is presented in recognition of his full portfolio of commitments to the UK Film Industry especially his work for the Cinema & television Benevolent Fund of which he is Vice Patron.
Today at the age of 83 he steadfastly refuses to retire and is in pre-production of his next film.
